Our Story……..

The Bridges Foundation was founded by a group of parents of children with disabilities on August 21, 1964. Parents wanted a safe environment for their loved one to work post-graduation while building their life skills and independence. The mission of Bridges quickly became to enhance the quality of life for individuals with unique capabilities, their families, and our community through training, education, employment services and advocacy. In 1988, Bridges saw the need to expand this program by offering community employment opportunities at competitive wages for each individual. The Community Integrated Employment Program provided individuals with a greater sense of independence and self-sufficiency. In an effort to continue providing pathways for individuals with disabilities or barriers to employment, Bridges introduced the Vocational Rehabilitation Program. This program provides job search assistance, placement, and one-on-one training directly with an employer.

Self-advocacy is important for people with disabilities. Beginning this educational process at an early age helps to build confidence and acquire the needed skills to achieve their desire for independence. Bridges introduced the Work Adjustment Program (WAT) in 2009 to provide the necessary education and resources for young students and families. Additionally, Bridges Summer Camp was developed as a way for families to have a safe environment for their children throughout the summer months. Summer camp offers youth ages 10-21 activities to continue educational goals, engage socially with their peers, and develop natural supports.

In an effort to continue providing meaningful employment, The Bridges Barkery opened in 2013. This innovative dog treat bakery teaches employment and life skills while promoting self-sufficiency and financial independence. The Bridges Foundation serves Tulsa and surrounding communities at our two locations in Jenks and north Tulsa.

Today……

The south campus Work Adjustment class visited Game Day Popcorn (108 E. Main St Jenks) to observe working in a retail location. It didn’t take long for owners Jaclan and Dennis Buczek to fall in love with the students and Bridges. We also fell in love with this amazing couple and could feel the love they had for our program. When they approached us about purchasing this business, we knew it was a blessing and meant to be. Game Day Popcorn will now be known as Bridges Mercantile. We will continue the tradition of Game Day Popcorn and also add some amazing products made by the individuals served at Bridges. Bridges Mercantile will provide employment opportunities for individuals with special needs. Each of their individual talents will be showcased in the products sold and customer service. You can visit the Mercantile to purchase popcorn, Bridges Barkery treats, handmade bath products for both you and your furry friend, as well as art and other goods made by the individuals served at Bridges.
